Consumer Credit Guide: How It Works, APR Rates and Online Application Process
Consumer credit is one of the most widely used financial levers for achieving personal goals: purchasing a vehicle, home improvement works, unexpected expenses or flexible cash flow. Strictly governed by the Consumer Code, it covers amounts between €200 and €75,000 over a minimum term of 3 months. Understanding its mechanisms, comparing the APR and structuring your application are essential to borrowing at a fair price and in complete security.

1. What is consumer credit?

In France and the European Union, consumer credit is an operation by which a credit institution makes available to an individual a sum of money intended to finance consumer goods or services, excluding the purchase of real estate.

Regulations stipulate strict thresholds: the amount borrowed must be between €200 and €75,000, for a repayment period exceeding 3 months. This framework ensures full consumer protection, particularly through the European Standardised Information Sheet (ESIS) which must be provided prior to signing any offer.

⚠️ Key takeaway for borrowers:
A loan is a binding commitment and must be repaid. Check your repayment capacity before committing. Financial institutions are legally obliged to verify your creditworthiness.

2. The different types of consumer credit

Depending on the nature of your needs, several borrowing solutions are offered by banking institutions:

Personal Loan (Unsecured)

This is the most popular option. The borrower may use the funds with complete freedom, without providing a purchase invoice or proof of expenditure. Ideal for travel, family events or as a financial safety net.

Tied Credit

The loan is directly linked to the purchase of a specific asset (e.g. car, motorcycle or home improvement loan). The agreement only takes effect if the sale is concluded. If the goods are not delivered or the order is cancelled, the credit is automatically terminated.

Revolving Credit

A permanent credit facility made available, which replenishes as you make repayments. Convenient for small, occasional amounts, its interest rate (APR) is generally higher than that of a standard amortising loan.

3. Eligibility criteria and essential supporting documents

To grant responsible financing, banks assess your creditworthiness and budgetary stability. Here are the key criteria analysed during your application:

Maximum debt-to-income ratio (33% to 35%)
Your monthly financial commitments (rent, existing loans) should ideally not exceed one third of your regular net income.
Sufficient disposable income
The amount remaining after deducting all your monthly payments must be sufficient to cover your day-to-day expenses (food, energy, transport).
No record with the FICP
A mandatory check is carried out against the National Register of Household Credit Repayment Incidents held by the Banque de France.

List of supporting documents to prepare for an online application:

  • A valid official identity document (National Identity Card, Passport or Residence Permit).
  • Proof of address less than 3 months old (electricity, gas bill or non-handwritten rent receipt).
  • Your last 3 payslips (for employees) or your last 2 tax notices (for self-employed and retirees).
  • An official Bank Account Details document (RIB) in SEPA format for disbursement and direct debit of monthly instalments.

4. Understanding APR and the true cost of credit

The Annual Percentage Rate of Charge (APR) is the most important legal indicator. It is the only rate that includes all mandatory fees related to your loan:

  • The base nominal interest rate (the bank's remuneration).
  • Any application fees (waived on most of our online offers).
  • The cost of borrower insurance if it is made mandatory.
  • Mandatory account maintenance or guarantee fees.
Amount borrowed Term Indicative fixed APR Indicative monthly payment Total cost of credit
€5,000 24 months 3.40% €215.75 €178.00
€15,000 48 months 3.95% €338.20 €1,233.60
€25,000 60 months 4.20% €462.80 €2,768.00

5. The protective legal framework for borrowers

14-day statutory withdrawal period

From the date you sign the credit agreement, you benefit from a statutory 14 calendar-day period to withdraw without having to provide any reason or pay any penalty.

Partial or full early repayment

You may, at any time, repay all or part of your loan early. In accordance with applicable legislation, no early repayment fee may be charged for consumer credit with a variable rate or whose remaining term is less than 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions: Consumer Credit

❓ What is the maximum amount for consumer credit?

Under French regulations, consumer credit is legally capped at €75,000. For smaller amounts, from €200, Flucredit offers financing solutions tailored to all profiles with fixed APRs.

❓ What is the difference between personal loan and tied credit?

A personal loan is unsecured: the funds can be used freely. Tied credit, on the other hand, is linked to a specific purchase (car, works) and only becomes effective upon delivery of the goods or completion of the service.

❓ How long does it take to obtain funds?

Once your application has received final approval and after expiry of the statutory withdrawal period, funds are generally disbursed within 48 working hours directly into your Flucredit current account or your designated bank account.
